Last month, state legislators in Kansas passed legislation that would require women who want abortions to be covered by their health insurance to purchase supplemental “abortion insurance.” During the debate about the bill in the Kansas House of Representatives, Rep. Pete DeGraaf explained his support of the bill by saying, "We do need to plan ahead, don't we, in life?" He then added, "I have spare tire on my car. I also have life insurance, I have a lot of things that I plan ahead for."

For some reason, I don't think an unwanted pregnancy is anything like a flat tire. Also, if women already have health insurance, why are they having to get coverage for specific medical issues? That's like saying I have car insurance but I need to get insurance against theft as well as damage.

By DeGraaf's reasoning, we should require a supplement for every condition we think we might have or develop. Could you imagine the outcry if all of a sudden we had to buy cancer insurance? I really don't think that this would have been up for discussion if we weren't talking about abortion. It’s nothing but a slightly veiled attempt to complicate abortion laws, which make it more difficult to for women to get the help they need.

While this situation sucks, there is a bright spot. They didn’t make women buy rape insurance. If they did, dressing slutty would have to be considered a pre-existing condition. Can you imagine getting your claim denied because you were asking for it?
