New Law In South Dakota Requires A 3-Day Waiting Period For Abortions - Quickie

A new bill signed into law by South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard on March 22, now requires a woman to get a counseling at a "pregnancy help center" and wait 72 hours after she is examined by a physician before she can get an abortion. His reasoning for signing the bill is, as he explains, "I think everyone agrees with the goal of reducing abortion by encouraging consideration of other alternatives. I hope that women who are considering an abortion will use this three-day period to make good choices." The ACLU in cooperation with Planned Parenthood have already mobilized to challenge the bills constitutionality.
This is one of 34 states that require a woman to receive counseling before she can receive an abortion and 25 of those require they wait a specified amount of time. However, it is interesting that a bill to require a 48 hour wait for a gun purchase was vetoed last year. In South Dakota, it is easier to buy a gun than have an abortion.
